From where I come from (a planet called the 70s) being a comic fan wasn't easy. Social media wasn't widely used back then, because , you know, wasnt invented yet! so fans could often feel isolated, even though we knew there were more readers out there. Finding them wasn't as simple. Fortunately, conventions have come to our aid!
Currently, conventions attract a large number of visitors, including fans of comics, movies, video games, and other forms of entertainment. At these events, you can meet famous guests from these series or movies, artists, various vendors, cosplay contests, and panel discussions on various topics related to both comics and pop culture.
All this information can be overwhelming if it's your first time attending one, which is why I'm giving you these simple tips to enhance your experience.
1.Wear Comfortable Clothing and Footwear: My first tip is to wear the most comfortable shoes and clothing possible. Keep in mind that large conventions are held in spacious venues, and besides walking, you'll likely be standing for long periods, waiting in line to get an autograph or photo with your favorite artist. I bet that by the second hour at the convention, you and your feet will start feeling tired, so nothing beats wearing comfortable clothes. If you wish, you can dress up in cosplay attire, meaning you can dress as one of your favorite comic or series characters. The atmosphere is very pleasant, and you'll surely meet people with similar tastes.
2.Stay Hydrated and Bring Snacks: Sometimes thirst and hunger can be mistaken for tiredness, fatigue, or boredom. Bring a small snack and a water bottle to stay hydrated. It's common to find prepared food and drinks for sale within the conventions if you decide not to carry your own. Whether you prepare it yourself or buy it, what really matters is that your experience is the best it can be.
3.Familiarize Yourself with the Schedule: Activities and schedules of the artists may be spread out over the days of the convention. If you don't organize yourself properly, you might miss out on the activity you were most looking forward to because you were in line or watching something just because it caught your eye. In my experience, it's always good to know the schedules of some presentations or conferences that interest you in advance.
4.Visit the Artist Alley: I never miss the Artist Alley of a convention! It's the convention's place where national and international artists meet readers to get to know each other and even chat. Getting to know the artists' work up close and being able to interact with them is an experience I highly recommend. In addition to being able to purchase products that greatly help them in their artistic work, these conventions are the only place where we can acquire them directly from the creators.
5.Set a Budget: Clearly, we'd like to buy half the convention, but it's best to organize our expenses by focusing on what we want most. At the exhibitor floor, it's always good to compare prices with the different attending stores, but don't let it happen to you like it did to me, where I ended up buying the figure I was thinking about because I was deciding for too long. Also, consider that conventions offer exclusive items for sale.
These are just a few tips that can help improve your experience at conventions. If you have any other tips or comments, feel free to write to me at elcomicologo@gmail.com.
